"Shiatsu has many beneficial
effects. In addition to
balancing ki energy ... it
is deeply relaxing"
|

Shiatsu an ancient Japenese bodywork that uses hand, knuckle, palm,
elbow, or foot pressure on specific points located along energy
pathways, called meridians. The purpose is to allow free flow of
ki (CHI) energy. The word shi translates
to mean "finger" and atsu means, "pressure".
The treatment begins with the client lying on a padded mat or futon
dressed in loosely fitted clothing. The client can start off in
either prone or supin position. Typically, by the position the client
chooses, usually indicates an area that needs more attention. For
example: if a client automatically lays on their stomach, this may
alert the therapist that the clients needs are pointing towards
the back area or bladder meridian.
The hand techniques used in Shiatsu are finger pressure, palm pressing,
holding and vibration, rubbing, shaking with hand or foot, patting,
tapping, and kneading. Joints are often put through their range
of motion to increase flexibility. Gentle stretching techniques
are also used. Specific points are held for apploximately 3-5 seconds.
The pressure can be shallow or deep.
Shiatsu has many beneficial effects. In addition to balancing ki
energy and the five elements to prevent disease, this ancient
system, reduces muscle tension, promotes functioning of the internal
organs, prompts peristaltic contractions of the intestines, is deeply
relaxing, and is useful in treating symptoms with no or slight organic
malformation. Shiatsu can also be adapted for self help purposes.
