Reflexology the study, science and art of using various touch techniques
on specific points of the feet, hands, or ears to normalize body
function, maintain optimum health and restore energy throughout
the body. Reflexologists theorize that points on the feet and hands
correspond to particular organs, glands, and other parts of the
body. The goal of the work is to break down crystal deposits in
the feet and help restore homeostasis, or internal balance.
There are seven basic reflexology techniques used to stimulate the
points: thumb walking, finger walking, thumb hook and back up, rotating
on a point, flexing on a point, pivoting on a point and finger rolling.
Sessions generally last 30 to 60 minutes. The client is comfortably
reclining in a chair or lying on a massage table. Reflexology can
be used alone or in conjunction with therapeutic massage, causing
the session to last for an hour and a half to two hours. (For example:
a one- hour massage and a half hour or more of Reflexology). Often
a well- trained and experienced therapist will use Reflexology to
help in the assessment process of the client and as a result, can
better treat their needs.
There are many reported benefits from Reflexology. Clients report
a feeling of deep relaxation after a treatment, pain may be reduced
or eliminated, circulation is improved, there is better oxygen and
nutrient supply to the brain and body, detoxification is promoted
and there is a normalization of the functions of organs, glands,
and structures of the body.
Reflexology promotes overall health and is used as complementary
care for people with a variety of conditions. For example, reflexology
can help alleviate headaches, reduce arthritic and back pain, decrease
the symptoms of addiction withdrawal, ease the swings of premenstrual
syndrome, and reduce the symptoms of diabetes.
