"Geriatric Massage can

effectively treat many of

these frailties associated

with the aging"

Geriatric Massage a massage system that emphasizes treating specific physiological and psychological conditions associated with the aging process. Geriatrics is a medical term that refers to the health disabilities and impairments of old age.

As a normal part of the aging process, the metabolism slows down, constipation may result; there are psychological, muscular, and connective tissue problems, which may be caused by stress, injury, wear and tear, or poor nutrition. There is a loss in muscular tone, and illnesses associated with longer life, such as cancer are more prevalent. Emotional traumas, as from personal losses, may have a devastating effect upon a person's physical and emotional outlook. In addition, the skin loses its moisture and becomes dry. Bedridden clients may develop bedsores or pressure sores, which must be carefully and lightly moisturized; joints may become stiff, arthritic and painful; bone mass is reduced, and often leads to osteoporosis and brittle bones; high blood pressure, heart disease, arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) are some of the possible circulatory complications and respiratory diseases such as smoking-related problems, asthma or bronchitis are more severe in older people.

Geriatric Massage can effectively treat many of these frailties associated with the aging. The system employs a variety of massage techniques, particularly Swedish Massage and Trager. The massage can be active or passive in nature, depending on the needs and physical condition of the geriatric client.

Geriatric Massage differs from regular massage because modifications must be made to suit the needs of the older population. Very often, improvisation is required of the practitioner. The working environment may not always be the norm, such as, working in a hospital or nursing facility, and clients may need assistance getting undressed, getting on and off the table, and putting their clothes back on. Often clients have to be treated while in bed, wheelchair, or geri chair. This is all part of the individual attention paid to Geriatric Massage.

A qualified therapist specifically trained in Geriatric Massage is important to ensure that the Geriatric client is properly assessed and the appropriate care is taken for certain medical conditions. Improper work can be harmful. It is recommended that all geriatric clients seek prior approval from their attending physician prior to receiving a massage.
