1. What are the requirements for massage
therapy in New Jersey?
On January 13, 2008 Governor Corzine signed the bill requiring all massage and bodyworkers to be licensed in the state of New Jersey. At this time, members are being selected for the board and soon the application process will begin. In the meantime, massage therapists have organizations such as The American Massage Therapy Association and National Association to give them credibility in the field of massage /bodywork. These Associations require the applicant be tested and strict requirements of continuing education to maintain membership. Kimberly Redfern has been a member of The American Massage Therapy Association since 1988 and is awaiting the application process for licensing in NJ..
2. How do I find a qualified massage therapist?
Finding a qualified massage therapist is very important. Especially
if you are receiving massage for a specific condition. Please
visit www.amtamassage.org for The American Massage Therapy Association membership listing.
3. How long does a massage therapy session
last?
A massage therapy session can last
anywhere from one-half hour to two hours. A minimum of one hour
is recommended in order to receive the maximum benefits. More
than an hour may be necessary for work on specific areas such
as the neck and shoulders. For certain clients, such as the geriatric
client, a shorter session may be all the person can handle. Please
consult your massage therapist so they can properly advise you
of the duration of your session. Therapeutic Touch by Kim, requires
a minimum of one-hour at a given location but can extend that
time or even work on 2 or more clients in a row.
4. How much does a massage
cost and are tips required?
Prices vary according to the area being traveled to. Our prices start at $80 hr. Tipping is not required but is appreciated.
5. What do I wear during my massage?
Most massages require the use of oils or lotions. Therefore, the
client must be undressed. Undergarments may be worn if preferred.
The client is completely covered with a sheet and blanket for
warmth, modesty and comfort. Most clients will put on a robe prior
to the therapist coming to their home. This allows for easy removal
and something to put on after the massage session is over. If
more comfortable, especially for the first time, a man may wear
a pair of gym shorts. However, if the client wishes to have the
gluteal area worked on, then full disrobing is recommended. Some
massage techniques such as Shiatsu and CranioSacral require that
that client be in loose, comfortable clothing. Please talk to
your therapist before your session to discuss any concerns you
have and to determine proper attire.
6. Does the therapist come to my home, office,
assisted living facility, hotel room, or hospital room?
Yes. Therapeutic Touch by Kim specializes in out-call services.
For over 14 years, we have provided massage therapy and reflexology
in the home, office, assisted living facility, hospital room,
and hotel room for the traveling professional. Our philosophy
is that it just makes more sense for the client to be in their
own home, where they are most comfortable. For the traveling businessperson,
they have little time to drive to a facility to receive a massage
and most are not familiar with the area. Having a massage in their
suite after a long plane ride is much more convenient. As for
the assisted living facility or hospital room client, driving
to a massage therapy office may not even be an option. There is
nothing like having a massage in your own home, hotel room, or
assisted living or hospital room and then relaxing afterwards.
Some clients will take a relaxing bath or shower after their session.
There is nothing worse then having to put clothes back onto an
oily body and then drive home and deal with traffic. That is one
way to undo a great massage. Therapeutic Touch by Kim offers different
operating hours in order to accommodate every client. We offer
weekend, evening, and daytime hours. Click

7. What is the first massage
like?
For the first massage therapy or Reflexology session, please allow
a few more minutes. The therapist will have you fill out a client
history form and may have some further questions for you concerning
your condition and expectations of the massage session. At this
time you may discuss any concerns you may have. Most clients are
nervous for their first massage therapy session. Try to relax
and communicate with the therapist if you feel any discomfort
or the level of pressure you wish to receive. For some clients
a second session may be necessary to fully benefit from the massage,
due to the fact that the client and therapist are more familiar
with one another. Each session the massage therapist can better
understand the clients needs and becomes more familiar with their
specific areas of tension. Massage therapy is a personal treatment
and every therapist has individual styles and is trained in various
techniques. It is important that the client and therapist be suited
for one another. If you are unhappy with the massage, it could
be for various reasons. Personalities, techniques, the level of
pressure, the environment, etc may all play a role. Communication
is important so that the therapist can meet your needs or in some
cases, to refer you to someone who can better serve those needs.
8. Can I get a massage if I am pregnant?
Yes you may receive a massage while
you are pregnant. It is recommended, especially for high- risk
pregnancies, that you consult with your doctor before receiving
a massage. Pregnancy Massage is a specialty and it is important
that you find a qualified therapist. Kimberly Redfern is certified
with the “National Association of Pregnancy Massage Therapy”
and has been trained with Caroll-Osbourne Sheets, a well-renowned
educator for pregnancy Massage. For more information on Pregnancy
Massage please see our Pre & Perinatal
Massage under the services section.
9. How often do I need to get a massage?
The frequency of massage therapy treatments varies with every
client. For general stress reduction it is recommended that the
client have regular sessions ranging from once a week to once
a month. For the client with high stress levels in their work
or personal lives, once a week is usually the norm. For specific
medical conditions, please consult your doctor, as well as, your
massage therapist for recommended session frequency. As with any
therapy, whether it be massage therapy, reflexology, chiropractic
care, or physical therapy, regular sessions are necessary to acquire
the most benefits and to make those benefits last longer.
10. What are the benefits
of massage?
Massage releases chronic tension and pain in muscles, improves
circulation, increases flexibility in the joints and reduces mental
and physical fatigue. Massage is also one of the most effective
ways to combat stress.
11. Will the massage hurt?
Massage on normal tissue is almost always a pleasant sensation.
Massage in the area of an injury or chronic pain may at first
cause some discomfort, which usually lessens noticeably in the
first few minutes. The therapist will always try to work within
your comfort zone. Tell your therapist if you feel any discomfort
so she can make adjustments.
12. What will I feel after
the massage?
After a massage session, most clients feel relaxed. However, some
people feel energetic. The next day or so you may also experience
flu-like symptoms but should not be concerned. Often the client
that has never had massage before or who has waited a long time
in between massages will feel those symptoms. This is due to the
built up of toxins in the body that are now being released. It
is recommended that you always drink plenty of water after your
massage to help flush out those toxins.
13. What methods of payment are accepted?
We currently accept cash, checks, master and visa cards
